Montaudran – Aérospace

Covering 56 hectares and forming part of the “Plaine Campus” urban project, the Toulouse Montaudran Aérospace designated development area (ZAC) is located to the south-east of Toulouse’s city centre in the Montaudran district. The overall site is designed around a large central plateau laid out to either side of the former runway. This becomes a major pedestrian space, a large horizontal monument and a setting for a range of events such as parades and flea markets, as well as offering an area to stroll around. A staggered urban system provides architectures that are open on all four faces and oriented in such a way as to provide noise protection from the A 620 motorway, as well as good natural lighting and views along the runway and the garden-parks. Along the runway, the created openings become spaces planted with dense shrub vegetation, providing shaded settings leading up to the main entrances and accesses to the buildings along the plazas and squares. The names of these public spaces pay homage to the various cities formerly served along the postal route. Leaping from one scale to another (from the 10 500 kilometres long airmail route to the 1 800 metres of the runway) and from one period to another, the airmail line is transcribed on the runway through addresses giving their names to the adjacent buildings.
