Student Residence

Rouen

Following the Villa Durable Urbaine (sustainable urban villa) call for experimentation launced in spring 2006 by PUCA (town planning, construction and architecture plan) and the subsequent competitive dialogue, the agency has completed three programmes covering 13 000 m² of floor area in Rouen : a student residence, 35 home ownership units and 82 social housing units. The buildings are organised around three landscaped spaces that gently drop away towards the Aubette river and the liste Sainte-Catherine hill.
The student residence, comprising two perpendicular main blocks, is protected from the noise of the road infrastructures. The common spaces open southwards towards the Aubette river which flows along the base of the Sainte-Catherine hill. The ground and first floors are open to the public and contain a cafeteria overlooking the hill, classrooms and a sports hall served by a mezzanine. The student bedrooms are located on the upper floors and accessed along naturally lit corridors.
This bioclimatic building combines a balanced ventilation system and a cavity wall with a long-lasting Alucobond® cladding. In 2012, the residence was awarded a gold medal by the EDF low carbon competition as well as the special jury prize.
