45 Housing Units Grande-Synthe

Located on the new Courghain square in Grande-Synthe, the operation forms part of the ANRU (French urban renewal agency) urban project organising the public space around the market square while enhancing the landscaped elements through the construction of a pool, the extension to the canal (watergang) and the creation of planted areas. The project is one of the three elements structuring the square. Formed from four buildings giving onto the square as well as another giving onto the extended Rue Dunant, the project includes shops and 45 housing units. The challenge facing these low consumption buildings (BBC) with their external wall insulation was to create a typology setting up a dialogue between solids and voids, providing views that stretch from the marketplace to more distant landscapes. Each housing unit has a dual orientation and a generously-sized south-west facing balcony without overhangs. All the common areas are naturally lit.
